Process for cracking with silica-alumina

Patent ·
OSTI ID:5016556
A process is described for cracking a hydrocarbon containing feed stream comprising the step of contacting the feed stream with a silica-alumina catalyst composition under such conditions as to produce hydrocarbon products having lower boiling ranges than the feed stream. The silica-alumina composition is prepared by a method comprising the steps of (A) mixing a first aqueous solution containing an aluminium salt and an ammonium salt of an acid having a pKa of less than 2 with a second aqueous solution containing an alkali metal silicate. The mol ratio of the alkali metal silicate to the aluminium salt is in the range of from about 2:1 to about 20:1 and the amount of the ammonium salt in the first solution is such that a coprecipitated silica-alumina hydrogel is formed after the mixing; (B) separating the coprecipitated silica-alumina hydrogel from the mixture of the two solutions; (C) calcining the hydrogel under such conditions as will result in the formation of an acidic silica-alumina.
