Pore volumes and densities of unformed pastes of lead acid battery plates. II. Tetrabasic lead sulfate pastes

The values of specific pore volume, v, and the density of solids, d, were determined for unformed lead--acid battery pastes prepared from 4PbO . PbSO/sub 4/; v varied with D, the apparent density of the dry paste, according to v = 0.398 -0.0698D. The parameters d and D were related by d = D (0.0698D/sup 2/ - 0.398D + 1)/sup -1/. By that relationship, however, d is variant with D, an unexpected result. It is proposed that the variance results because the crystals of 4PbO . PbSO/sub 4/ tend to orient in tight bundles, especially for the pastes with the highest values of D. Such bundles entrap open pits on the crystal surfaces, and the measured values of d are then reduced.
