We calculate the leading-order matrix element for the decay [ital B][r arrow][ital K][sup *][gamma] in the quenched approximation of lattice QCD on a 24[sup 3][times]48 lattice at [beta]=6.2, using an [ital O]([ital a])-improved fermion action. Extrapolating to physical quark masses gives an on-shell form factor of [ital T][sub 1]([ital q][sup 2]=0)=0.15[sub [minus]14][sup +12] (stat). We find [ital T][sub 1] is approximately independent of the spectator quark mass and extract [ital T][sub 1]([ital q][sup 2]=0)=0.15[sub [minus]4][sup +5] if this independence is assumed. We find the results to be consistent (in the standard model) with the CLEO experimental branching ratio of [ital B]([ital B][r arrow][ital K][sup *][gamma])=(4.5[plus minus]1.5[plus minus]0.9)[times]10[sup [minus]5].
