Improved low-energy absolute pair-production cross-section measurements in targets of Z = 26, 29, 50, 82, and 92

Journal Article · · Phys. Rev. A; (United States)
Absolute cross sections for the production of electron-positron pairs by photons incident on targets of iron, copper, tin, lead, and uranium were measured using an improved internal source spectrometer which employs two large intrinsic Ge detectors. The measurements were made for 2.615 MeV and a mixture of 1.1732- and 1.3325-MeV ..gamma.. rays in the decays of /sup 228/Th and /sup 60/Co respectively. The results are in excellent agreement with theory and clearly indicate that there are no deviations of the experimental cross sections from theory, of more than a few percent, down to the effective energy of the /sup 60/Co ..gamma.. rays. The results also indicate that the improved spectrometer should yield cross sections near threshold with far smaller uncertainties than those measured with the older version.
