A melting furnace is described comprising: a refractory vessel, a molten bath retained therein, a metal liner having sidewall portions and a bottom plate positioned within the refractory vessel and spaced-apart from inner surface portions thereof, electrically energizable heating means for supplying heat to a lower portion of the melting furnace positioned within a space between the bottom plate and a bottom wall of the refractory vessel, molten bath-like material within the space between the bottom plate and the bottom wall, the heating means being spaced-apart from the bottom wall of the refractory vessel, and the bottom plate having raised portions which receive the heating means positioned within the space formed between the bottom plate and the bottom wall of the refractory vessel.
