Impact of air pollution on Christmas tree plantings

Journal Article · · Am. Christmas Tree J.; (United States)

There has been, over the past 10 years, acute and chronic air pollution damage to the foliage of eastern white pine (Pinus strobus L.). It was found that chlorotic dwarf - a wide-spread foliar disorder of white pine in the Midwestern and Eastern States - is caused by air pollution. And recently, chronic symptoms of the effects of air pollution were found on several other species in Christmas-tree plantings in three northeastern states. From our studies of symptoms and causes chlorotic dwarf of eastern white pine, we found that it may be possible to identify and eliminate susceptible trees from the nursery and to breed resistant trees. But ultimately, air pollution must be controlled.
