Rapid determination of PCDD's and PCDF's in municipal waste incinerator fly ash by one-step jar extraction followed by low resolution capillary gas chromatography-tandem mass spectroscopy (flash GC/MS/MS)

The incineration of municipal waste has been inextricably linked to the production of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans (PCDD/PCDF). Significant quantities of these toxic substances have been found in fly-ash samples obtained from municipal waste incinerators in all parts of the world. Of particular concern is the fact that PCDD/PCDF appear to remain, to a significant degree, in the vapor phase after their production and are thus expelled directly into the environment. A representative proportion of these contaminants, however, is believed to remain adsorbed onto the fly-ash and the analysis of this matrix may be considered a fair indicator of the rate of PCDD/PCDF production during incineration. The ultimate objective of this study is the development of a rapid (<0.5hr/sample) analytical procedure for the quantitative analysis of PCDD/PCDF in fly-ash which can be carried out at the incinerator site in order to quickly assess incinerator operating conditions with respect of PCDD/PCDF production.
