Cellular ceramic products help curb diesel engine emissions

Cities have already discussed the possibility of banning diesel buses from their streets because of the sooty, smelly exhaust they produce. And the EPA has legislated strict diesel particulate emissions regulations for buses and heavy-duty trucks that take effect in 1993 and 1994, respectively, and get tighter through the year 2000. This paper reports that engine, bus, and truck manufacturers are testing aftertreatment systems that they hope will enable them to clean up diesel exhaust beyond levels which they have achieved with improvements in engine design and electronic controls. The two most promising aftertreatment systems are diesel trap oxidizers and catalytic converters.
