The characteristics of the ultrasoft x-ray emission spectrum of lanthanum in the vicinity of the N/sub 4,5/--O/sub 2,3/ transitions have been studied. The transitions were excited by electrons with an energy varied over the region of the excitation and ionization potentials of the 4d shell (98.4--203.9 eV). The emission is shown to result primarily from transitions from excited initial state of the ion core of lanthanum, even when high-energy electrons are used to excite the spectra.
