Illinois produced 39,083,839 bbl of crude oil in 1971, a decline of 10.7% from 1970. The price of crude oil in 1971 was based on a gravity scale. The estimated average price in 1971 was $3.47 per bbl, making a value of $135,620,921 for crude oil produced in Illinois during the year. In 1971, 542 new tests for oil and gas were drilled, resulting in 238 oil wells, 16 gas wells, and 288 dry holes. Of the 542 new oil and gas tests, 154, or 28.4%, were wildcats (half a mile or more from production), of which 22 were completed as producers, a success ratio of 14.3%. In connection with underground storage of natural gas, 258 wells were completed in 1971; these include 91 new wells and 11 conversions in existing projects and 156 structure tests in search of suitable storage structures. Estimated crude oil reserves declined from 241.4 million bbl at the end of 1970 to 217.0 million bbl at the end of 1971. At the end of 1971, 33 underground natural gas storage projects were either operating, being developed, or being tested in Illinois. Active Illinois storage projects have an estimated total capacity of 1.7 trillion cu ft. Thirteen mined caverns for storage of liquefied petroleum gases have a total capacity of 3.2 million bbl. Fifty-seven new waterfloods were added in 1971, and 28 waterfloods were abandoned.
