Title: Potential for reuse of textile dyeing and finishing wastewater by hyperfiltration

Journal Article · · NWSIA J.; (United States)

The wastewater from dyeing and finishing operations of a textile mill was run through four types of hyperfiltration membrane modules which separated this wastewater into a purified product water and concentrated brine. Both the product water and the concentrated brine were reused in full-scale dyeing operations in two-piece dyeing beck at La France Industries. The product water replaced the plant process (tap) water in full-scale reuse dyeings. Dyeings using the concentrated brine were carried out with additional dyes added to achieve a particular shade. Eighteen separate plant dyeings were conducted with recycled product water and/or concentrated brine. The finished fabrics were generally the equivalent to standards in crocking, Weather-O-Meter and Fade-O-Meter tests. The hyperfiltration membrane modules were in operation for periods ranging from 190 hours to more than 1000 hours. Using the performance data of these modules, the capital and operating costs of four types of hyperfiltration plants processing 7570 m/sup 3//day (2 x 10/sup 6/ gallon per day) of textile dyeing and finishing wastewater were estimated. The results of these estimates show that the net unit costs for these plants varies from 5.5 cents/m/sup 3/ (20.9 cents/1000 gallon) to 26.1 cents/m/sup 3/ (99.2 cents/1000 gallon).
