A brief report is given on a research program having three major projects: (1) modified cetane scale for rating low ignition quality alternative fuels; (2) autoignition and combustion of alternative fuels in diesel engines; and (3) flame propagation and combustion of alternative fuels in gasoline engines. The work performed during the first three months of the program are described.
