Thermometric titration studies of the effect of head group, chain length, solvent, and temperature on the thermodynamics of micelle formation

It has been demonstrated by Benjamin that thermometric titrations are well suited for the study of the thermodynamics of micelle formation in aqueous solutions due to the rapidity with which determination can be made and the accuracy of direct measurement of the enthalpy change. The particular instrument used was designed to allow for temperature control from 20/sup 0/ to 35/sup 0/, long-term (8-hr) stability, and moderate (5 to 10 min) thermal equilibration time. A schematic diagram of the calorimeter used for the enthalpy titrations is illustrated. The changes in enthalpy, entropy, and heat capacity that accompany micelle formation for sodium, octyl, decyl, and dodecyl sulfate, dimethyldecyl and dimethyldodecyl phosphine oxide, sodium dodecoyl sarcosinate, and dodecylpyridinium chloride and bromide were determined by thermometric titrations between 21/sup 0/ and 35/sup 0/ in an aqueous solution.
