This is a special report on the industry in Canada as the nation enters the 1970's. All sections of the industry are covered in this annual review of what is happening in the Arctic islands, off shore, the Prairie Provinces, and the territories. Natural-gas markets in North America are expanding rapidly. With gas reserves declining in the U.S., heavy demands are being placed on Canadian gas reserves. New export permit applications are pending before Canada's National Energy Board which involve over 8 trillion cu ft of gas, as major gas-transmission companies endeavor to bolster their long-term supply of Canadian gas. With about 40% of Canadian production being exported, some concern is being expressed over Canada's own future gas supply. Despite the rapid growth in production rates, large new additions to reserves are being made yearly. Canada's total petroleum demand is expected to rise by 5.5% this year to an average 1,455,000 bpd. Crude production should reach 1,403,000 bpd, giving the nation a position of 96% self sufficiency. Tabular data show the number of exploratory wells for 1969 and 1970. Records were set in the production of crude oil, natural gas, natural-gas liquids, and sulfur in 1969, as shown by tabular data.
