The following fields are considered: The atmospheric 'pollution climates' in Europe; Effects of atmospheric pollution on trees and forest ecosystems; Effects of atmospheric pollutants on aquatic ecosystems; Effects of atmospheric pollutants on agricultural crops; and Preventative and restorative measures. Specifically, the book presents a review of current scientific knowledge in the areas described, identifies major gaps, and recommends how they may best be filled. Where feasible, critical levels and loads of pollutants are identified, below which undesirable effects are unlikely to occur, taking due note of interactive and long-term cumulative effects. Finally, management rules and treatments are recommended for the restoration of disturbed ecosystems.
