Maraflood process: a current appraisal

High oil displacement and the ability to tailor slug viscosity have been incorporated into a reliable secondary-tertiary recovery technique. This process, called ''Maraflood,'' is a patented secondary recovery method which can theoretically recover up to 100% of movable oil in a reservoir. The process is a miscible-type recovery process wherein a slug of micellar solution is injected into the formation to displace reservoir oil and water. The micellar solution is driven by a mobility buffer which, in turn, is propelled by water. This combination has high displacement efficiency and excellent mobility control, 2 features critical in any recovery process. Maraflood has performed well in 3 Illinois field tests. Further testing is being conducted at deeper reservoirs in Pennsylvania. Oil recovery has been good, and economics of the process are still being evaluated.
