Regularization and renormalization of four-fermion theories

We regularize local four-fermion interactions in four dimensions by considering them as the limit of nonlocal, nonpolynomial, fermion interactions. Terms that vanish formally in this limit contribute, however, to the renormalization of induced bosonic excitations. In this way we can establish the formal equivalence between the four-fermion and the boson-plus-fermion generating functionals.
