This paper reviews the progress and future promise of computer-aided software development for science and engineering applications. Current research and end-user tools are examined. New hardware technologies may produce the rapid improvements needed for a productive environment. The needed capabilities are set in the context of the various computers to be used, from workstations to parallel supercomputers. Recent changes in the computer marketplace are evaluated in this context. Some of the leading software development efforts are discussed in more detail.
