A direct-execution computer executes a high-level language program without an intervening software compilation. The authors propose a pipelined direct-execution machine based on bit-slice microprocessor technology. The intended application is to small-scale scientific problem solving, for example, by students. The language considered here is ALGOL W, but the concepts investigated can be applied to any similar block-structured language. The authors assume that the system consists of a processor, a user console, and a disk storage unit. The system must be able to read and write source files from the disk storage unit, edit them, and execute selected programs. 24 references.
