Title: Desorption of phenanthrene in coal contaminated sediments: Effect of organic cosolvents on release kinetics

Desorption kinetics for phenanthrene in coal contaminated sediments were determined using mixtures of acetone and methanol as cosolvents in water. At a given fraction of cosolvent, the less polar acetone induced desorption of greater amounts of phenanthrene than did methanol, but at similar rates. Kinetic constants were obtained by fitting desorption data to a first-order model. As predicted by cosolvent theory and microscopic equilibrium, desorption rates increased with increasing fraction cosolvent. Experimental design and period of observation of the desorption process appeared to affect the observed desorption constants.
