TM-sand steam stimulation project, Huntington Beach offshore field - a remarkable example of a heavy oil reservoir responding to the cyclic steam injection process

The TM is a thin, unconsolidated, upper Miocene sand reservoir containing a 12/sup 0/ to 15/sup 0/ API gravity crude. Attempts to economically produce the reservoir prior to the introduction of the steam huff and puff process were unsuccessful due to the low rate of oil production and excessive sand problems. Steam stimulations since 1964 through gravel flow packed slotted liner completions have turned previously uneconomical recovery from this reservoir into a moderately profitable project. Development of the reservoir is designed on an acre-footage basis (one well per 250 to 300 acre-ft of reservoir) depending on the geologic complexities and the net thickness of sand which ranges from 40 to 60 ft. Signal's approach to cyclic steam injection is discussed, including: (1) coordination and education of operation personnel; (2) scheduling of wells to be steamed; (3) determination of heat inputs; and (4) handling the well after steaming is completed.
