Excited states of /sup 99/Ru have been studied using the /sup 98/Mo(/sup 3/He,2n..gamma..)/sup 99/Ru reaction at 13 MeV. Gamma ray angular distributions, gamma-gamma coincidence, and gamma-gamma directional correlation measurements are used to construct the level scheme and make spin and parity assignments. Gamma ray excitation functions are used to investigate the characteristics of the /sup 3/He reaction. A rotational model is used to interpret the data and identify the angular momentum multiplets which result from the coupling of the core and odd neutron angular momenta. Four such multiplets are identified by a comparison of predicted and observed branching ratios. A significant success of the model is the predicted decay of the 11/2/sup -/ state at 1070 keV, through competing E1 and M2 transitions, which is confirmed by the data. The characteristics of all four multiplets are accounted for by the Coriolis interaction and the variable momenta of inertia. The excitation function data indicate that the yields of all non-yrast transitions have similar energy dependences. Thus, yields for a few known transitions may be used to predict more appropriate bombarding energies in future experiments. The principles of operating the lithium vapor charge exchange ion source, used for the production of the /sup 3/He-beam, are discussed. Some of the unique complications arising from the /sup 3/He reaction are also discussed.
