The anomalous J/{psi} suppression in Pb-Pb collisions at 158AGeV observed recently by NA50 can be explained as due to the transition to a phase of strong J/{psi} absorption, which sets in when the local energy density exceeds about 3.4 GeV/fm{sup 3}. {copyright} {ital 1997} {ital The American Physical Society}
