Plane oxygen vibrations and their temperature dependence in HgBa{sub 2}Ca{sub 2}Cu{sub 3}O{sub 8+{delta}} single crystals

A polarized Raman-scattering investigation of HgBa{sub 2}Ca{sub 2}Cu{sub 3}O{sub 8+{delta}} single crystals has been performed. The following Raman-active modes associated with oxygen vibrations in the CuO{sub 2} planes have been clearly identified: the B{sub 1g} mode at 245 cm{sup {minus}1}, corresponding to the out-of-phase vibration of the plane oxygens, and the A{sub 1g} mode at 265 cm{sup {minus}1}, corresponding to their in-phase vibration. Another defect-induced A{sub 1g} mode was also detected at 400 cm{sup {minus}1}. Measurements of the temperature dependence of these Raman features demonstrate that the A{sub 1g} 265- and 400-cm{sup {minus}1} modes show abrupt changes in frequency and linewidth across T{sub c}, accompanied by an appreciable intensity enhancement in the superconducting state. However, similar {open_quotes}anomalies{close_quotes} were not observed for the 245-cm{sup {minus}1} phonon of B{sub 1g} symmetry. {copyright} {ital 1997} {ital The American Physical Society}
