The fluorescence properties of Sm{sup 3+} and Sm{sup 2+} ions incorporated in silicate glasses were measured using steady-state and laser-induced line narrowing techniques and the effect of Al{sup 3+} ions to the local structure around the Sm{sup 2+} ion was investigated. Sm{sup 3+} ion-containing glasses prepared by a sol{endash}gel method were reacted with H{sub 2} gas to form the Sm{sup 2+} ions. The energies of the three Stark levels of the {sup 5}D{sub 0}{r_arrow}{sup 7}F{sub 1} transition were analyzed using {ital C{sub 2v}} symmetry. The addition of Al{sup 3+} ions facilitates dispersion of the Sm{sup 2+} ions and increases the coordination number of the Sm{sup 2+} ion due to the long distance between the Sm{sup 2+} and O{sup 2{minus}} ions, resulting in the increased fluorescence intensity. The fluorescence intensity of the Sm{sup 2+} and Sm{sup 3+} ions considerably increases in glasses containing more than 5 mol{percent} Al{sub 2}O{sub 3}. {copyright} {ital 1997 American Institute of Physics.}
