Deformation effects in neutron scattering from the Sm isotopes

Conference ·
OSTI ID:4952953

Deformation effects in neutron scattering from isotopically enriched Sm{sub 2}O{sub 3} samples have been studied at an incident neutron energy of 7 MeV where a maximum of the deformation effects was observed in total cross section measurements on the same isotopes. Differential cross sections for elastic scattering and inelastic scattering (first 2{sup +} state) were measured for {sup 148}Sm and {sup 150}Sm and for {sup 146}Nd, which was included in this study to aid in separating isospin effects from deformation effects. Cross sections for the sum of elastic and inelastic scattering (first 2{sup +} state) were determined for {sup 152}Sm and {sup 154}Sm. Experimental cross sections are compared to the results of non-spherical optical-potential coupled-channel calculations.
