Water level declines in the geothermal system underlying Boise, Idaho, prompted the Idaho Department of Water Resources to suspend development in 1987. The declines were caused by the production from new district heating systems which came online in the 1980`s. Currently, the four district heating systems (in order from the oldest to most recently developed) are: (1) Boise Warm Springs Water District, (2) Capitol Mall, (3) City of Boise, and (4) veterans Administration Regional Hospital. The four systems produce about 650 million gallons annually. Monitoring data have been collected for the Boise geothermal system since 1976. Recent data indicate that water level declines have ceased and that a new equilibrium may be in the process of being established. The moratorium is scheduled for review in 1997.
