Klamath Falls geothermal district heating system evaluation

Conference ·
OSTI ID:494333

After several years of difficulties and limited operation, the Klamath Falls, Oregon, geothermal district heating system is now providing reliable and expanding service. However, further expansion and continued reliable, cost-effective operation are necessary to improve the economic viability of the system. Evaluation of the system capacity and the connected loads shows that the system is operating at less than half of design thermal capacity, and can support considerable additional expansion if the flow and AT are controlled at the connected buildings. Control system improvements, particularly for the production wells and district heating loop circulation pumps, will provide improved operation and reduced operating cost. System maintenance, especially corrosion control, will help assure continued reliable service.
