Strategically partnering with communities to challenge NIMBY, NIABY and NOPE

Conference ·
OSTI ID:49426

There was once a time when communications between a corporation and local communities was very limited, if not avoided. Today however, the relationship between a corporation and its host community is irrevocably changing. A complex mix of health and safety concerns and environmental activism, coupled with an educated consumer, is reshaping the framework in which corporations do business. This can best be illustrated in the evolution of NIMBY, ``Not In My Back Yard``, to NIABY, ``Not In Anybody`s Back Yard``, to in some cases NOPE, ``Not On Planet Earth``. This paper discusses both the practical and strategic approaches to partnering with communities as an essential management initiative, not merely an exercise in damage control. Concepts and processes for developing a community relations initiative as a risk and vulnerability reduction tool and a foundation for crisis and emergency response are discussed. Examples of issues challenged by NIMBY, NIABY and NOPE are used to further underscore the contribution such an approach can make to an organization`s short term and long term business plan.
