Synthesis of a variety of bichromophoric {open_quotes}ball-and-chain{close_quotes} systems based on buckminsterfullerene (C{sub 60}) for the study of intramolecular electron and energy transfer processes

Diels-Alder reactions between C{sub 60} and selected dienes yield {open_quotes}ball-and-chain{close_quotes} compounds bearing multiple chromophores rigidly bound through a saturated polynorbornane-bicyclo[2.2.0] hexane hydrocarbon bridge. Molecular mechanics, semiempirical, and ab initio calculations were invoked along with X-ray crystallography in the study of conformations of these compounds. The aim of these studies is to prepare well-characterized compounds for the study of intermolecular electron and/or energy transfer. 41 refs., 5 figs., 3 tabs.
