The Sikes Superfund Project, a remediation of 185 contaminated acres in Crosby, Texas, involved incinerating some 500,000 tons of soil and treating 350 million gallons of wastewater in a 2 1/2-year round-the-clock operation that was completed in late 1994. The nature of the project required very short turnaround times on analytical results. This led to the establishment of a dedicated on-site laboratory that provided all analytical support services for the duration of the project, analyzing in excess of 500 samples a month for as many as parameters at a cost of less than $250 per sample. Preliminary sampling in 1982 indicated the presence of phenolic compounds, benzene, toluene, xylene, vinyl chloride, creosote, and other organics. The first remedial action was performed in 1983 by the US EPA.
