Thesis. A large prototype multiwire proportional chamber was constructed. The theory of these detectors is exposed together with the conditions imposed on the geometry of the chambers. The problems encountered in the development of the prototype are presented together with the solutions obtained. A description is given of the different elements of the signal receiving electronics, amplifier, and shaping circuit together with that of the verifying logic and event memory. Two other similar sized chambers were also fabricated. These chambers differ from the prototype in which the wires are hand positioned and soldered; a special automatic machine at CERN being used to weave the wires. The detection efficiency problem was overcome by fixing the distance between the wires (2.5 mm) and by providing the gas feed system with an accurate flow rate regulator for cach gas thus ensuring a control of the freon concentration. This factor is extremely critical. A detection efficiency of greater than 93% was reached immediately after putting gas into the new chambers, no special adjustments being inade to the electronics. After all the adjustments had been made, the efficiency was 98%. (FR)
