Gamma measurements on Trino fuel assemblies

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4938548
In the framework of a cooperative program between ENEL and EURAOM, gamma spectrometry measurements were performed on twelve fuel assemblies of the 257 MW(e) TRINO VERCELLESE PWR to study the correlations existing between radioactive fission products and the burnup and plutonium content. These assemblies reached a burnup between 19,000 and 22,000 MWD/MTU; six of these assemblies had a 3.13% enrichment, the other a 3.90% enrichment in /sup 235/U. The gamma detection line consisted of a Ge(Li) detector connected through an ADC to a 4 K computer. A mechanical and collimation system permitted measurements to be performed at different levels on the four corners of the fuel assemblies in the spent pond of the TRINO VERCELLESE plant. The gamma ray activities of the fission products were correlated with values of burnup and plutonium content generated by the BURSQUID, a two dimensional burnup code, in the three neutron group version (two thermal and one fast).
