Purification of uranium by selective sorption of uranyl chloride on anion resin (in Portuguese)

A technique for the transformation of crude sodium diuranate (SDU) into nuclear grade ammonium diuranate (ADU) is described. HCl is used for the dissolution of SDU with the purpose of exploring the selective sorption of uranyl anionic chlorocomplexes on a strong anionic ion exchanger column. The uranyl chloride is acid deficient and receives the addition of NaCl as a supplier of Cl/ sup -/ ligand. The uranium from 80 g U/l solutions 5M in NaCl, pH 1.0-1.5, is sorbed onto an anionic ion exchanger column, the resin washed after with alcohol. The decontamination of phosphate is achieved by addition of Al/sup 3+/ to the influent and to the alcohol used for washing. The decontamination of Fe(III) and Cd(II) does not present any problem. The retention of Morn by the resin is practically complete and it is not eluted with uranium. The uranyl chloride is eluted with water. The eluted solution containing in media 100 g U/l is precipitated with NH/sub 3/ in the presence of EDTA. Molybdenum is eluted after uranium, with dilute HCl. The procedure allows efficient decontamination of several impurities, such as thorium, rare earths, cadmium, iron, boron, phosphate, silicate, molybdenum, alkali metals, alkaline-earth metals, and others that accompany the uranium in its concentrate proceeding from the industrial processing of monazite.
