Excitation functions and recoil ranges of residual nuclei produced through Kr induced transfer reactions in $sup 209$Bi targets

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4937069

The excitation functions and projected recoil ranges for /sup 211/At, / sup 210/Rn and /sup 211/Rn produced through /sup 84/Kr + /sup 209/Bi reactions were measured from 430 to 500 MeV. The general features of the reactions (the shapes of the excitetion functions, and the variation of recoil range versus incident energy) are very similar to results obtained with lighter projectiles and are unambiguoualy characteristic of noncompound-nucleus processes. Complementary measurements performed on a nataral T1 target show that the cross sections for 4 charge and 5 charge transfer reactions are of the order of 1mb. Therefore, in the reactions /sup 84/Kr + /sup 209/Bi yields /sup 210-211/Rn, the co ntribution of the 4 and 5 charge transfers followed by fast alpha decay is not significant, and the main mechanisms involved are the transfers of 2 and 3 charges.
