Practical method giving a quantitative estimate of oceanic pollution (in French)

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4935113

As a logical followup to a preceding report treating similar questions for the atmosphere, a simple method is presented for calculating oceanic pollution. The method consists essentially of a Gaussian solution to a diffusion equation, the variable coefficients of which have been obtained by experiment. As is the case for air, the originality of the method resides, principally, in never forgetting that the importance of diffusion effects depends on their duration and that the Gaussian solution is more and more near to the physical reality of the problem with increasing smallness of the extent of its validity in space and time. It is for this reason that the instantaneous point-emission model was chosen as the elementary formulation. It is, in fact, this elementary formulation which gives the model its flexibility by permitting the practical resolution of all types of problems likely to occur with a minimum reasonable amount of calculation facilities (point and extended sources, instantaneous and continuous sources, transient regimes, complex current carriers). The method is always open to improvement as the numerical value of the parameters can be modified with the increased experimental experience acquired. The extension to a number of problems concerning the pollution of freshwater (lakes, water courses) should not present major problems. (auth)
