Phenomenology of inclusive reactions

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4934190
It is stated that the study of strong interactions recently has been dominated by multiparticle production and the attempts to learn the dynamics which govern the cross sections, multiplicities, correlations, etc., of such processes. Our understanding of the behavior of total cross sections comes almost entirely from using the optical theorem to translate the study to that of elastic scattering amplitudes. The systematic behavior of these, in turn, can be largely explained by Regge theory and duality. The content of the lectures is mainly a generalization of this approach to inclusive reactions. The sectional headings are: kinematics and definitions; Mueller's optical theorem; duality; fragmentation region phenomenology; central region phenomenology; triple Regge behavior; finite mass sum rules; applications of FMSR: semi-local duality for Reggeon-particle scattering; diffraction (Pomeron-particle total cross section, Pomeronparticle elastic scattering); correlations.
