Single crystal Ge(Li) gamma-ray spectrometer

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4934066
A true coaxial Ge(Li) detector of 30 cm/sup 3/ sensitive volume and its associated electronics were set up as a single crystal gammaray spectrometer. The characteristics of the spectrometer were investigated for optimum performance using /sup 241/Am /sup 57/Co, /sup 137/Cs /sup 22/Na, /sup 54/Mn /sup 60/Co, /sup 88/Y and /sup 232/Th standard gamma-ra y sources. The best resolution was found on biasing the Ge(Li) detector with 1300 volts. Counting rates higher than 400 pulses/sec result in shifting the position of the spectrum. The use of Baseline/ Pileup Rejector (indicated as R/R) allows for higher counting rates up to 2000 pulses, with a negligible shift in the position of the gamma spectrum and without any serious changes in the resolution. Time constants for the spectroscopy amplifier were found to be optimum at 1 mu sec for both differentiation and integration times. It was found necessary to set the R/R shaping time constant at a value which is always equal to the spectroscopy amplifier time constants. The FWHM at the 1173 keV gamma line of /sup 60/Co was found to be 4.7 keV. Noises due to electronics contribute basically with 1.9 keV to the FWHM of the gamma-lines. The resolution and photopeak efficiency dependence on the gammaray energy were investigated. The gamma-ray spectra from various radioactive sources are shown. (auth)
