The Site Characterization and Analysis Penetrometer System (SCAPS) detects underground petroleum contamination using a laser induced fluorescence (LIF) sensor that is hydraulically pushed into the ground by a 20 ton cone penetrometer truck. The sensitivity of the sensor depends on both the excitation wavelength and the composition of the petroleum contaminant. The efficiency of three laser sources (Nitrogen laser at 337 nm, XeCl excimer laser at 308 nm and Nd:YAG laser at 266 nm) have been compared using soil spiked with fuels and various fuels dissolved in acetonitrile.
