Groundwater at an industrial site has been contaminated with a mixture of alkylpyridines along with other organic materials. Studies were conducted by the authors to evaluate the potential for using bioremediation to clean up this site. Laboratory tests indicated that monosubstituted pyridines were readily biodegradable but 3,5-lutidine was relatively resistant. Both mixed and fixed-film aerobic reactors were effective in degrading the alkylpyridines, but the fixed-film reactor gave better efficiency. Thus, aerobic processes were shown to offer potential for bioremediation of the alkylpyridine-contaminated site.
