The stability properties of tokamak discharges with reversed or negative central shear are being investigated using the linear and nonlinear, ideal and resistive, magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) stability code FAR. The FAR code solves either the reduced or the full set of MHD equations in toroidal geometry, including shaping, compressibility, and finite beta effects. Linear ideal calculations indicate that such discharges exhibit robust stability to current-driven and pressure-driven modes. Preliminary linear resistive calculations with the full set of compressible MHD equations point to the existence of a weak pressure-driven instability in the region of negative central shear. More systematic studies are currently under way in preparation for nonlinear calculations and their results will also be presented.
