Ripple induced trapped particle loss in tokamaks

The threshold for stochastic transport of high energy trapped particles in a tokamak due to toroidal field ripple is examined by explicit construction of resonances, including locations and widths. The expressions are given in magnetic coordinates and make no assumptions regarding shape or up-down symmetry. Approach to stochastic threshold is not simply given by the Chirikov criterion, but governed also by nonlinear separatrix broadening.
