Using Monte Carlo simulation to derive risk-based cleanup levels
- Fluor Daniel GTI, Pittsburgh, PA (United States)
In preparing the feasibility study to address contaminated soils at a wood-treating facility, the EPA required the owner to derive target cleanup levels. The owner developed the cleanup levels based on the results of the risk assessment that the owner submitted as part of the Remedial Investigation. The risk assessment indicated that risks to workers exposed to surface soils exceeded EPA`s target risk range. Carcinogenic polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (cPAHs), pentachlorophenol (PCP) and arsenic were the primary contaminants that contributed to the risk. Cleanup level development focused on these primary contaminants, their respective site-specific distributions across the site and the probabilistic approach referred to as Monte Carlo simulation.
