Energies and yields of prompt neutrons from individual fragments in the fission of U{sup 233} + n

Conference ·
OSTI ID:4875528

Neutrons from a reactor strike a fissionable source (U/sup 233/ in this case), and a time-of-flight system is used to study the behavior of fragments. The number of neutrons, the average neutron energy, and information on the error in the latter are derived. Results for U/sup 233/support a model for the process in which the fragments are cold at separation, with one of the fragments highly distorted. A statistical model that treats the fragments as spherical and hot is shown not to be valid. (D.C.W.)
