Hoechst Celanese cuts methanol to fit market

Journal Article · · Chemical Week

Hoechst Celanese Chemical Group (Dallas) provided the US methanol market with a major reality check last week when it lopped 5 cents off its posting price, revising the contract number to 48 cts/gal. Other producers who joined in the January increase are expected to follow, while those who kept their prices at 47 cts or 48 cts/gal say they are standing pat. Despite the adjustments, market watchers say contract methanol is still moving at 42 cts-45 cts/gal, and that material on the spot market moves at about 40 cts/gal. One shipment recently moved out of the US at 36 cts-37 cts/gal, but sources familiar with the deal say it was an isolated case that did not threaten to undermine the spot number.
