Catalysts: Fiercely competitive chemical catalysts markets heat up
Basking in the chemical industry`s economic recovery, catalyst producers face brightening prospects that promise to continue well into next year. But at the same time, rapidly shifting technologies--particularly in the polyolefins business--and continued fierce market competition are reconfiguring many sectors in the $3.1-billion/year chemical catalyst business. {open_quotes}The first half of 1994 was excellent,{close_quotes} as chemical markets recovered and producers caught up on catalysts replacement, says Robert Hartye, v.p./sales and marketing at United Catalysts Inc. (UCI; Lexington, KY). After a dismal 1993, in which UCI`s catalyst business--heavily into commodities such as methanol, styrene, and ethylene--plummeted 20%, markets {open_quotes}across the board{close_quotes} have recovered to 1992 levels, Hartye says.
