Comparison of thermo-mechanical characteristics of textile composites

Resin Transfer Molding (RTM) technique holds the promise of a cost-effective means of production of composite parts. When compared to the traditional hand lay-up, autoclave cure or compression molding, it can produce a near-net shape of the part from a preform that is produced from an automatic textile process. As use and demand for composite parts increase in aerospace, automobile, and many consumer goods, it becomes expedient that the structural merits of this method be explicitly defined. This study therefore systematically compares the mechanical, and thermal properties of textile composite panels fabricated by RTM technique and the hand lay-up autoclave cure method respectively. The observable differences in the properties of the two differently fabricated materials was not significant. In fact the resulting difference in fiber density ratio could have caused this.
