EXPERIMENTAL HEAT TRANSFER AND PRESSURE DROP OF LIQUID HYDROGEN FLOWING THROUGH A HEATED TUBE

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4843654
Heat-transfer and pressure-drop characteristics of liquid parahydrogen flowing through a vertical tube are correlated on film conditions using the Martinelli parameter and a modified Dittus-Bcelter experimental Nusselt number relation. Conditions investigated were: inlet pressure, 30 to 70 lb/sq in. abs; heat flux to 1 Btu/(sq in.)(sec); temperature differential, 50 deg to 750 deg R between wall and bulk. The friction losses are negligible relative to the momentum losses, and pressure drop may be predicted by the one-dimensional momentum equation. Paraortho conversion is discussed, and property data and a design procedure are presented. (auth)
