Since Prof. Imao Tamura proposed the concept of {open_quotes}master cooling curve{close_quotes} more than 30 years ago to indicate only the characteristics of quenchants excluding other factors, the researches on quenchants have been still in the ascendant. In 1982, a wonderful breakthrough {open_quote}The Wolfson Engineering Group Quench Test{close_quote} carried the research to a new stage. However, the method is indiscriminately employed more often than not for a lack of an insight into the test mechanism and the cooling curves measured by the probes. In response, a series of tests were designed to manifest the influence of probe and its cooling behavior on assessing cooling characteristics of quenchants. In the paper, the cooling curves measured by thermocouple-geometric-centered probes with different materials, shapes and sizes were investigated, and the cooling behaviors and the cooling mechanism of the various probes were discussed. Extended application of the probe method in actual quenching production was reviewed from the angles of probe`s design, interpretation of the results and heat-treating practice. It is the conditionality for measurement and the relativity of results that are the cruxes of the matter.
