The deviation of the composition of uranium dioxide from the stoichiometric oxygen--uranium ratio of 2.000 is calculated from the assay for the uranium(VI) in the oxide. The sample is dissolved in hot phosphoric acid under an inert atmosphere to preserve the oxidation states of the metal, and the uranium(VI) is determined polarographically in a phosphoric-perchloric acid medium. Because this is a direct determination of the deviation from stoichiometry, it is best applied to samples which are nearly stoichiometric, and the composition of a uranium dioxide sample which has an oxygen--uranium ratio of 2.03 or less can be determined to within 0.001 oxygen atom.
